On Friday, October 25, 2013, Humeston Firefighter Dan Sponsler was greeted
by family, friends and fellow department members with a surprise reception in
his honor for being awarded a Liberty Mutual "Be Fire Smart' award for
Heroism.

Sponsler, who has been on the department since 1996, was nominated through
the Facebook page of "Be Fire Smart" by his daughter Heidi for his rescue of a
family pet in a Humeston house fire over 10 years ago, where Sponsler was
injured and and had to have surgery.

Heidi wrote, "A local house was on fire in the middle of the night.  The family
got out but their dog was still in the house.  My Dad went in and rescued the
dog and on his way out of the house he fell on the steps and injured both knees
requring surgery to both.  He has recovered since, but his knees still give him
trouble from time to time and always will, but he is still dedicated to the Fire
Department and doesn't let his knees stop him from doing a wonderful job
along with the other when they are called out."

Liberty Mutual Represenative Jim Schuberth was present to give the award.
Liberty Mutual awards hundreds of local firefighters every year, and then they
select National award winners who went above and beyond the call of duty.
